Three Ways to Change the World

Here are three ways to change the world using the internet.

The first is to be interested. There are more news websites than you can shake a stick at. There is the BBC, CNN and, if you like the more satirical, The Onion, as well as many others. News is instant and accessible now, so really there is little excuse to be up to date. A good way to keep up with what is going on is to make a news site your homepage.

Way number two: be active. Facebook, the number one social networking site (sorry Myspace), has a lot of applications. Most of them are useless—look people, throwing sheep is only fun for so long. However, Superbadger, created by Tearfund, is one application that can change the world. It informs you of things that need to be changed, and not only that, gives you a way in which to do it. They provide ready written e-mails for you to send to badger the people that can make the changes happen. It could not be easier. There are other petitioning sites too, including Avaaz and the 10 Downing Street website. Both are worth looking into. Also, looking on websites of charities is a good way to see how you can be involved, from donating to buying fantastic presents for Christmas.

The last way, and probably the most fun, is to be creative. There is a fantastic website called Etsy where you can sell your handmade goods, made from recycled bits and bobs. Not only do you have fun making it, you get money from selling it. It’s a great initiative to encourage recycling and small enterprises. Other ways is to start a blog, and make sure your friends read it.

There are, of course, hundreds of ways to use the internet to change the world. Respond to this video, or write on your blog and post a link in the comments section on ways to do this.
